DESCRIPTION:Join author of “The Traveller’s Tale” Dr Ray Bassett over a two course lunch. \nMore details tbc\, however you can reserve a place with Sharon now at sharon.walshe@stephensgreenclub.ie \n  \n  \nDr Ray Bassett is a former senior Irish diplomat who served as Irish Ambassador to Canada\, Jamaica and the Bahamas 2010-2016. He holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Trinity College Dublin. His postings include Copenhagen\, London\, Belfast (twice)\, Canberra and Ottawa. \nBassett was the longest serving Irish State official dealing with Northern Ireland\, working for two decades under Taoisigh\, Albert Reynolds\, John Bruton\, Bertie Ahern and Brian Cowen. Bassett was part of the Irish Government delegation to the Good Friday Agreement negotiations in 1998. He subsequently became the Irish Government’s representative in Belfast 2001 to 2005 and part of the Agreement’s Implementation Team.  His experiences are chronicled in his recent book\, The Traveller’s Tale. The Travellers were a group of Irish officials who gathered information on the situation on the ground in Northern Ireland for the Irish Government and provided a direct line of communication between the Irish Government and community representatives and others in the North. \nBassett was also head of Ireland’s Consular Services from 2005 to 2100\, dealing with the welfare of Irish citizens overseas\, including relations with Ireland’s Diaspora. He also was responsible at that time for the operation of the Irish Passport Service. \nSince retiring from the Department of Foreign Affairs\, Bassett has been a regular commentator on current affairs in both the English and Irish languages. He has published several books\, including Ireland and the EU\, Post Brexit; Walking the Walls of the Phoenix Park; in addition to the Traveller’s Tale.. \n
